Happy Nakba Day!

Yesterday, May 14 was Nakba Day - the day on which Arabs mourn what they view as the "disaster" of the founding of the State of Israel on May 14 in 1948.

What has changed since 1948? On the one hand, Israelis looked forward and built a strong, thriving, successful nation, with her amazing economic, scientific, medical, agricultural and technological achievements, all while sacrificing tremendously in human and material capital. She has become a successful, democratic nation while in the midst of a sea of hatred and hostility. Israel has survived multiple wars and constant attempts to destroy her. Israel is the only nation that ended the 20th century with more trees than at the beginning of the century; she is on the verge of water independence due to development of desalinization plants; she has reached out and provided humanitarian aid above and beyond all the other nations in times of need (witness Haiti, Nepal and many other instances); and of course, she has become the haven she was intended to be, the home to Jews from around the world, not just in times of need, but also today, to fulfill the Zionist dream of Jews who elect to live there.

And the Palestinian Arabs? Many of them continue to rot in refugee camps established by their brethren in surrounding Arab nations that refuse to accept them as citizens. They seethe at their self-induced despair and poor living conditions, still clinging to the dream that one day the Jews will be driven into the sea and they, the rightful owners of the land of "Palestine" will march back to their land, waving the keys to their nonexistent homes in triumph.

And the rest of the world? Much of the world enjoys and relies on Israel for her technological, medical and agricultural savvy, while continuously disparaging her at the United Nations with one-sided resolutions designed to weaken and eventually destroy her. Israel has thriving relations with the United States, the European countries, Russia, India, numerous African nations, growing trade and relations with much of Asia, peace treaties with Jordan and Egypt, and quiet, under-the-table relations with unnamed Arab and Muslim nations.

Yet, even with these thriving relations, we are witnessing rising levels of anti-Semitism not seen since before WWII, the growth of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, whose ultimate goal is the destruction of Israel, physical threats to Jewish students on college campuses in the United States, Iran on the cusp of developing nuclear weapons and their delivery systems, and the growing realization among Israelis and world Jewry that ultimately, Israel is the Jew among nations and the world still hates the Jews. Seventy years after the end of WWII and 67 years after the re-establishment of the nation of Israel, the Jewish nation is the only nation on the planet threatened daily with destruction.

Israel has succeeded beyond almost everyone's wildest dreams to become a true oasis in an arid desert. As for Nakba Day, let those who continue to dream of destroying the only Jewish nation on earth continue to stew in their fetid existence. For, while they dream of conquering Israel, Israelis don't just dream, but work toward conquering cancer.

A contrast worth noting.
